『発明BOYカニパン』の続編で、前作から5年後という設定である。レギュラーキャラクターは思春期世代になり、キャラクターデザインも一新され頭身が延びた。当初は前作のようなコメディ、特にラブコメを散りばめた構成だったが、次第にかなりシリアスなストーリー展開へ進んでいった。今作を中心にCD・コミック連載・ゲームソフト発売を軸にしたメディアミックスが展開され、本放送時にはドリームキャストの拡販を目論んでいたセガ・エンタープライゼスをメインスポンサーに迎えた。その為劇中にもドリームキャストのメモリーカードが登場する。。Set in a small town in West Texas, four boyhood friends who made a solemn promise to leave town together immediately after high school graduation must now "put up or shut up." The clock is ticking, and as all 81 people in town watch, offer advice, and place bets, these four very different boys struggle with the biggest decision of their lives . . . whether to stay or leave home...。
